Projects

A selection of the projects we have carried out over the years.

ESIA The Bergendal Eco and Cultural River Resort (2008)

This ecolodge was established by the Kersten Group, one of the major trading companies in Suriname, on the banks of the Suriname river. The aim of the project is to give a boast to development of ecological and culture tourism in the Surinamese hinterland. For this project, we did an environmental impact study together with NIMOS and the IADB. As this was a new development site in the jungle, we mapped the impacts on the ecology of the Suriname river. The project resulted in a high-quality tourism destination with a limited ecological footprint, providing optimal employment for the local community.

Rehabilitation of the East-West Link from Meerzorg to Albina (2009-2012)

The East-West Link is part of Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IRSA). This road segment improves the interconnection between Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil. We were hired in 2009 to perform an ESIA prior to construction of the new road segment. We complied with the assessment formats of both financers: the IADB and the EU. Subsequently we were asked by the IADB to implement part of the ESIA by conducting a number of training programmes about entrepreneurship in the fields of tourism and forest product development for the various local communities. Our approach was to focus on local entrepreneurship that was already taking place and offering tools to increase professionalism and productivity. We provided training for açaí producers in the Moengo area, local shopkeepers in Tamanredjo, and local tourism operators und Stolkertsijver and Moengo.

ESIA and Monitoring Carolina-Redi Doti Bridge 2015-2016

We finalised an ESIA for the construction of this new bridge across the Suriname River. The project aimed to improve road accessibility of the Para district to the rest of the country. After delivering the ESIA, we monitored the execution of the construction in accordance with the ESIA. The bridge was delivered on schedule.

ESIA Johan Adolf Pengel Airport Expansion, 2017

Johan Adolf Pengel Airport, the international airport of Suriname, has the ambition to grow to 1 million annual passengers by 2028. To this end, a new terminal building, taxiway and parking lot are projected. Commissioned by NV Luchthavenbeheer, the airport management company, we studied the impact of the building project on the surroundings, which is especially challenging as the airport is neighbouring indigenous lands; we recommended a consensus with tribal peoples be reached.

ESIA Fermentation Plant Suriname Alcoholic Beverages (SAB), 2018

SAB is the main brewery and distillery in Suriname. With the aim of onshoring part of the production process, the company projected to build a fermentation plant on its existing production site in the centre of Paramaribo, the capital. P-all provided an ESIA on the building and the operation of the projected plant.

Interim Management Peperpot Nature Reserve, 2017-2019

Peperpot is a former plantation in the Commewijne district, turned into a nature reserve. It is one of the last forested areas near Paramaribo. Commissioned by the Dutch Postal Code Lottery Fund, under supervision of WWF Suriname, we took over management of the reserve. We successfully transformed it into a financially self-sustaining institution for tourism, education, and scientific research, before handing it over to a permanent manager.

Environmental Monitoring Ministry of Education Projects, 2018

At nine dispersed locations in the Sipaliwini district in the hinterland, we monitored environmental and social impacts during the construction of new school buildings.

ESIA Off-Shore Surveys Tullow Oil, 2017-2019

P-all was the local go-to counterpart for Tullow Oil’s global environmental partner, AECOM. For AECOM, we provided several ESIAs for different off-shore drilling projects.

ESIA Electrification Eastern Suriname, NV EBS, 2019

For Suriname’s national electricity company EBS, we conducted an ESIA for the construction of a 140-kilometre transmission line linking Paramaribo to Albina. The aim of the project is to provide the entire east of the country with electricity.

ESIA Brokopondo Watra Wood International NV, 2019

This innovative company harvests tropical hardwood from submerged dead trees in the Brokopondo Reservoir, using divers. We studied the impact of this operation on the ecology of the reservoir and the impact of the onshore wood processing on the surrounding area, including a tribal village.
